Vitamin D is associated with bone health due to its ability to promote calcium absorption. However, this is not all vitamin D does. It also plays a role in cell growth, immune function, and the reduction of inflammation; among other functions(<a title=\"The use of calcium and vitamin D in the management of osteoporosis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2621390\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">1<\/a>,<a title=\"Vitamin D and the Immune System\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3166406\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">2<\/a>,<a title=\"Inflammation and vitamin D: the infection connection\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4160567\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">3<\/a>). It is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it is <span class=\"st\">absorbed along with fats in your diet and can be stored in the body&#8217;s fatty tissue. Because of this generally, a smaller amount is needed to maintain good health. Consequently, areas further from the equator, like New York, receive less UVB light exposure. During the fall to winter months, the days become shorter and so does the emission of UVB rays. (<a title=\"9 things that can undermine your vitamin D level\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/healthbeat\/9-things-that-can-undermine-your-vitamin-d-level\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">4<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Melanin:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Melanin is the substance in your skin that makes it dark. UVB rays penetrate the skin to kick-start the body&#8217;s vitamin D production. These two substances compete, and as a result darker-skinned people generally require more UVB light to produce the same amount of vitamin D as lighter-skinned people.\u2020<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Temperature:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Warm skin is a better coefficient for vitamin D production than cooler skin. So hotter days will likely produce more vitamin D than colder ones.\u2020<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Age:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">As you age the substance in your skin that converts UVB rays decreases. Due to this, older people may not produce vitamin D as efficiently as younger people.\u2020<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Co-factors:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Making sure you have sufficient vitamin D co-factors( vitamin K2, magnesium, boron, and zinc) are essential for optimal production of the vitamin and overall health. For example, magnesium is essential in the metabolism of vitamin D. However, this value may change depending on your exposure to sunlight, as well as some of the factors above. In some people levels of <strong>1000\u20134000 IU, or 25\u2013100 micrograms,<\/strong> is considered sufficient(<a title=\"The importance of body weight for the dose response relationship of oral vitamin D supplementation and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in healthy volunteers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25372709\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">8<\/a>). One form, Vitamin D<sub>2,<\/sub> is obtained from the UV irradiation of the yeast sterol ergosterol and is found naturally in sun-exposed mushrooms. UVB light from the sun strikes the skin, and humans synthesize vitamin D<sub>3<\/sub>, so it is considered the most \u201cnatural\u201d form. (<a title=\"Vitamin D: The \u201csunshine\u201d vitamin\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3356951\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">10<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Despite this, you may not be receiving <em>enough<\/em> of the vitamin from the sun. If you live in an area further from the equator and spend most of your day indoors, you may want to look into supplementing your vitamin D intake with foods and supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Although the sun is considered the most natural source of this vitamin, dermatologists advise against tanning in order to get this vitamin. To protect your skin, use sunblock while outdoors in bright sunlight or for long periods.
