Then, they came after gluten. Now, they\u2019re coming after what\u2019s been dubbed \u201cmodern wheat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between popular books and hundreds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/wheatfree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#wheatfree<\/a> reels on TikTok, health influencers and experts alike have blamed modern wheat for everything from digestive issues and weight gain to chronic diseases and autoimmune disorders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To separate fact from fiction, we dug into some of the science and spoke with registered dietitian, Denise Hernandez, MS, RD, for her take on the wheat controversy.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-modern-wheat\">What is modern wheat?<\/h2>\n<p>There are three main types of wheat used today: Triticum vulgare (or aestivum), T. durum, and T. compactum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModern wheat\u201d refers to the wheat that has been processed and refined for mass production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7756780\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a> suggest this process results in higher yields and cost savings, yet also reduces the nutrients in the grains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"645\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/is-vegetable-oil-bad-1024x645-1.jpg\" alt=\"Is Vegetable Oil Bad? | MyFitnessPal\" class=\"wp-image-55979 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/is-vegetable-oil-bad-1024x645-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.myfitnesspal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/is-vegetable-oil-bad-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.myfitnesspal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/is-vegetable-oil-bad-768x484.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.myfitnesspal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/is-vegetable-oil-bad.jpg 1504w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">You might also like <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.myfitnesspal.com\/vegetable-oil-bad-for-you\/\"><strong>Is Vegetable Oil Bad For You? &gt;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ancient-grains-vs-modern-wheat\">Ancient grains vs. modern wheat<\/h3>\n<p>In light of the anti-wheat craze, many health gurus have started recommending ancient grains as a healthier alternative to modern wheat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/wholegrainscouncil.org\/whole-grains-101\/whats-whole-grain\/ancient-grains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whole Grains Council<\/a> defines ancient grains as \u201c\u200b\u200bgrains that are largely unchanged over the last several hundred years.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Popular ancient grains include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quinoa<\/li>\n<li>Spelt<\/li>\n<li>Millet<\/li>\n<li>Amaranth<\/li>\n<li>Barley<\/li>\n<li>Farro<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But how do these ancient grains compare to modern wheat?
