One big way to help&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mayafellernutrition.com\/maya-minding-menopause-iii-impact-and-recommendations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manage this transition<\/a> is a good menopause diet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman&#8217;s pattern of eating, especially during the menopausal transition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/16\/1\/27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can have an impact on hormones<\/a>,\u201d says Maya Feller, MS, RD, CDN, and member of the MyFitnessPal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.myfitnesspal.com\/introducing-myfitnesspal-scientific-advisory-council\/\">Scientific Advisory Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A healthy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.myfitnesspal.com\/women-s-health-nutrition\">nutrition plan for women<\/a> can make a huge difference in how you feel during menopause and can even help manage some of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/menopause-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frustrating symptoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understanding-how-menopause-impacts-your-body\"><strong>Understanding How Menopause Impacts Your Body<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Menopause is marked by not having a menstrual period for one full year. It\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/mayafellernutrition.com\/maya-minding-menopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">natural transition<\/a> that typically happens around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/menopause\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">age 51<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But many women&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/menopause\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">start feeling symptoms<\/a> earlier, during the time of hormonal upheaval known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/perimenopause\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">perimenopause<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perimenopause can start as early as your mid-30s and bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/menopause\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">symptoms<\/a> like hot flashes, mood swings, and low energy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/introduction-to-menopause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Estrogen drops<\/a> throughout this time, and decreased estrogen can impact your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8801823\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bones<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9862030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">muscle mass, and metabolism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-menopause-and-weight-gain\">Menopause and weight gain<\/h3>\n<p>In your 40s or 50s, you might notice that your favorite jeans feel a bit snug, even if your eating habits haven&#8217;t changed. Weight gain during this time of life is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9258798\/#:~:text=Introduction,4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">common<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s often a lot of guilt about this because people feel that their bodies should look a particular way,\u201d says Feller. Women blame themselves for the weight gain. That\u2019s especially helpful now because your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2023\/02\/20\/the-connection-between-menopause-and-cardiovascular-disease-risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">risk of heart disease goes up<\/a> around menopause. According to a recent study, a high fiber diet during this time is also associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/menopausejournal\/abstract\/2021\/02000\/inverse_association_between_dietary_fiber_intake.8.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fewer symptoms of depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-calcium-rich-foods\">Calcium-rich foods<\/h3>\n<p>Your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.endocrine.org\/patient-engagement\/endocrine-library\/menopause-and-bone-loss#:~:text=Research%20indicates%20that%20up%20to,a%20fracture%20during%20their%20lifetime.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bones need extra care before, during, and after&nbsp;menopause<\/a>. Eating more dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified plant-based milks could help. Adding yogurt or almond milk to your daily routine is an easy way to boost your calcium intake.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-protein\">Protein<\/h3>\n<p>Feller recommends paying special attention to protein. \u201cGetting <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/nutritionreviews\/article\/79\/1\/66\/5936522?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enough protein supports lean body mass<\/a> especially when paired with <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsmedicine-open.springeropen.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40798-022-00508-w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weight-bearing activities<\/a>,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She encourages women to vary their protein sources, choosing both plant-based proteins like beans, seeds, and nuts, and animal sources. \u201cIf they choose to include meat I prefer lean meat and seafood,\u201d says Feller.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-oily-fish\">Oily fish<\/h3>\n<p>Salmon, mackerel, and sardines are packed with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10780928\/#:~:text=Dietary%20intake%20of%20omega,intake%20(grade%20B%20recommendation).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/a> that could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8313386\/#:~:text=Omega%2D3%20fatty%20acids%20may%20play%20a%20major%20role%20in%20preventing%20depression%20as%20the%20metabolites%20of%20omega%2D3%20fatty%20acids%20can%20exert%20anti%2Dinflammatory%20action%20and%20have%20a%20protective%20effect%20against%20depression%20by%20increasing%20the%20serotonin%20levels%20%5B9%5D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help reduce inflammation<\/a>, protect against depression, and support heart health. While&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.myfitnesspal.com\/what-to-know-seed-cycling-registered-dietitian\/\">seed cycling<\/a> is popular, there&#8217;s no solid proof it helps with menopause symptoms, but seeds are still a nutritious choice.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-foods-to-limit-or-avoid-during-menopause\"><strong>Foods To Limit or Avoid During Menopause<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While adding beneficial foods to your menopausal diet is important, knowing which ones to cut back on can be just as crucial.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not saying you have to cut out everything you love, but limiting the following may help:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fatty-or-processed-meats\">Fatty or processed meats<\/h3>\n<p>These are high in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10780928\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unhealthy saturated fats and sodium<\/a>, which can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10708231\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase heart disease risk<\/a>. Limit bacon, sausages, and deli meats.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-refined-grains\">Refined grains<\/h3>\n<p>White bread, pasta, and rice <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/food-nutrition\/understanding-carbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can lead to blood sugar spikes<\/a>. Swap sugary snacks for fruits or nuts and choose water or unsweetened drinks over soda.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alcohol\">Alcohol<\/h3>\n<p>Alcohol during the menopausal transition can have negative effects. \u201cIn general, for all people, alcohol can increase blood pressure,\u201d says Feller. During perimenopause and menopause, this increase in blood pressure can also have an impact on the frequency, as well as duration, of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35684078\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hot flashes<\/a>. \u201cAlcohol during this transition should be minimized.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-caffeine\">Caffeine<\/h3>\n<p>For some,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/menopause\/hot-flashes-what-can-i-do#:~:text=Avoid%20alcohol%2C%20spicy%20foods%2C%20and,to%20maintain%20a%20healthy%20weight.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">caffeine can make hot flashes worse<\/a> and mess with your sleep. Maybe try cutting back a bit to see if it helps. Decaf coffee or herbal tea could be easier on you.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spicy-foods\">Spicy foods<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8548750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spicy dishes<\/a> can trigger hot flashes for some people. Strength training can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6279907\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improve bone health<\/a>.
