{"id":29971,"date":"2024-09-30T20:15:07","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T20:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/?p=29971"},"modified":"2024-10-01T00:02:09","modified_gmt":"2024-10-01T00:02:09","slug":"94-years-of-wisdom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/everything-else\/94-years-of-wisdom\/","title":{"rendered":"94 Years of Wisdom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, I flew to Massachusetts to visit my 94-year grandmother in the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me tell you about this amazing woman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbara, Auntie B, or Gramma to us grandkids, was born in 1930 to first-generation Newfoundlanders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(No wonder I love the music of<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5nGPgcZ3CWI\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alan Doyle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XdqVLL7YX_M\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Big Sea<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), it\u2019s in my DNA!)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gramma was a preschool teacher for 22 years and has been an active member in her community for her entire life. She was a heck of a quilter and helped launch multiple quilting initiatives over the years. She volunteered at the Council on Aging. She often drove for Meals on Wheels too, \u201cdelivering meals to the old people\u201d (as she called it), which she did well into her 80s!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During past visits to Massachusetts, I would swing by Gramma\u2019s for an afternoon, habitually checking my phone, often distracted with some unimportant work thought that occupied my brain. I think having known her my entire life, I just had this thought \u201cGramma has always been here, and Gramma will always be here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, I stumbled upon an ancient Japanese concept that helped me recognize and course correct this pattern. It allowed all of my recent visits with Gramma to be decidedly different.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ichi-go Ichi-e \u4e00\u671f\u4e00\u4f1a<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>There\u2019s a concept dating back to Japanese tea ceremonies in the 1600s called ichi-go ichi-e:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This translates to: \u201cone time, one meeting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a reminder for us to treasure and embrace each unrepeatable moment in time. No matter how often we do something or see somebody, it is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time that it will truly happen <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this way, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this moment.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This concept can remind us to be more present.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of checking our phones, we can focus on the person or task in front of us.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of worrying about tomorrow or zoning out, we can be here now.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of going through the motions, we can be a bit more deliberate with our behavior.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>I\u2019ve reflected a lot on Japanese Zen philosophy over the past few years (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/wabi-sabi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><b>see my essay about Wabi-Sabi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><b>), and this concept of ichi-go ichi-e has stuck with me too.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which brings me to my trips to visit Gramma this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I stopped worrying about the future or ruminating on the past, put my phone down, and just sat with her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I treated each visit as if it was the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> time that I would get to have that interaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I asked her questions about her childhood.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I learned that she spent a few summers living in a tent with no running water or electricity, while her father built their home with his own two hands. And how much she <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loved it.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>She told me about her teenage years,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including the time she snuck out of the house and got caught, and had to sit at the foot of her parents bed until the sun came up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I learned more about my grandfather.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> She even shared photos of her wedding that I had never seen before:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/email-3\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also found some photos of me and her from way back in the day!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>This one was my favorite:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/email-4\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>I returned to Nashville last month, unsure when (or if) I\u2019d get to see her again.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It still felt different. I had connected with Gramma more deeply in a few visits than I probably had in the past 10 years combined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which brings me to this past week at the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Gramma&#8217;s Community<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Last week, my brother and I drove up to visit Gramma in the hospital each day.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And each day, a revolving door of guests would show up to check on her:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her nieces and nephews. My uncle and father. My sister and mother (who just had surgery!). Her grandkids. The son of her best friend. Her friend Anne. Friends from the Council of Aging. Fellow quilters. People from her church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At one point, there were 10 of us visiting at the same time, and it turned into an absolute party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was in awe of this woman and how many lives she has impacted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there\u2019s a clear sign of a life well lived, it\u2019s being surrounded by people who love you. Gramma has been selfless for so much of her life, and I was amazed and inspired at how many people dropped everything to come and spend time with her, swapping stories and keeping her company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Despite the circumstances, she still has a great sense of humor too:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first time she opened her eyes and saw me, she smiled and said, \u201cI remembered another story!\u201d She then told me about the time she \u201cborrowed\u201d a car, even though she didn\u2019t have a license yet, to drive through the streets of Boston to track down her boyfriend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While talking on the phone with her 94 year old brother in law, she asked \u201chow are ya, you old geezer?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the doctor asked \u201care you feeling better today?\u201d she replied \u201cbetter than WHAT!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending time with Gramma and all of the people from different parts of her life felt like the best possible use of my time. I am in love with the community she has around her, and I am constantly moved to tears by the love that so many people have for her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This point was driven further home by my Gramma\u2019s hospital \u201cneighbor\u201d\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Live Deliberately<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/email-5\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>The hospital in which my Gramma is staying is right next to Walden Pond, the very pond made famous by Henry David Thoreau in his book<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/47L8KS8\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><b><i>Walden<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One day, after visiting Gramma, I took a quiet walk around its perimeter, watching the light of the setting sun dancing through the trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The Japanese have a word for this too, it\u2019s called \u201ckomorebi\u201d.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>I then read the sign with Thoreau\u2019s most famous reflection:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/email-6\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Thoreau retreated to solitude to discover what was most important to him.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gramma went the other direction, prioritizing what\u2019s most important to her: family, friends, and community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two different scenarios, the same end result:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing to live deliberately.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t have plans on moving into the woods and living simply, but I do think I\u2019ve done my best to live more deliberately these past few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, re-prioritizing what\u2019s most important to me too: friends, family, and community.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>All We have to Decide&#8230;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>A few years ago, Gramma presented my brother, sister, and I with three of her favorite handmade quilts.<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was going to have these given to you grandkids after I passed away, but I want to give them to you now so that we can enjoy this moment together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She took the time to explain the meaning behind each quilt and why they were selected for each of us. I\u2019m so thankful she did this, rather than waiting to hear about these beautiful quilts after she passed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I visited Gramma this summer, I discovered that she had printed my essay<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/how-to-live-a-life-worth-living\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about my grandfather, her husband, who had passed away<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I hoped I made Grampy proud, but I realized I never got to tell him just how much I learned from him before he died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For that reason, I\u2019m writing this essay now to make sure she knows just how much she taught me. I\u2019m so proud of my Gramma and I\u2019m appreciative for having the opportunity to learn from her for 40 years (and counting!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(I got a text from my father yesterday letting me know that he read this draft to her in the hospital and she loved it. Mission accomplished!)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I certainly hope Gramma gets better and is able to get back home. After all, she told her friend Laurie \u201cI\u2019m not done yet!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>But I also know that this is not up to us to decide.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Gandalf tells Frodo in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fellowship of the Ring<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>I hope my Gramma and Thoreau can inspire you to live more deliberately:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>If you\u2019re willing to put your phone down<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and be present with the people in front of you, life can feel so much more rich.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>If you\u2019re willing to prioritize what\u2019s actually important<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of the stuff that tries to steal your attention, you\u2019ll never go wrong with the choices you make.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>If you can find a way to focus on the important people in your life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019ll still be a part of it when you\u2019re 94.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally remember, no matter what you do today, this is the only time <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moment will happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Act accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>-Steve<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>PS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you want a thought-provoking film about being present and Ichi-Go Ichi-E, I highly recommend Wim Wenders\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Iv8YO5BXCAQ\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfect Days<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/94-years-of-wisdom\/\">94 Years of Wisdom<\/a> first appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\">Nerd Fitness<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, I flew to Massachusetts to visit my 94-year grandmother in the hospital.
