I\u2019m going on break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I kid, I kid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Water is good for you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; a significant portion of your body is composed of water, and when you lose fluids through sweat, exertion, bodily functions, etc, consuming water can help you replenish fluids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HOWEVER\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>The whole \u201c8 glasses of water a day\u201d thing is not law.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, there\u2019s no real proof of this being a proper amount at all.<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"refmark-1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we\u2019ve told you before (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/how-to-determine-your-perfect-workout-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">perfect workout<\/a>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/10\/healthy-eating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the perfect diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), we are all unique snowflakes, and we all require different amounts of water!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3822460 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/chef-south-park.gif\" alt=\"Chef saying &quot;Everybody&#039;s different, but that&#039;s okay.&quot;\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somebody that exercises with regularity and goes on a lot of long runs will require more water than somebody who exercises less regularly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no exact amount of water that works for each person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So where did this magical \u201c8 glasses of water a day\u201d number initially come from?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nobody really knows.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3825842 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/han-solo-shrug.gif\" alt=\"A gif of Han Solo shrugging, because he doesn&#039;t know where that water advice came from either.\" width=\"481\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Snopes<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"refmark-2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in 1945 the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council stated that adults should take in about 2.5 liters of water per day (which is roughly the equivalent of eight glasses of water), but it also noted most of that intake level was already satisfied through the consumption of food without the need for the additional drinking of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>That\u2019s right, you get a SIGNIFICANT amount of water from the food you are consuming.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A huge percentage of our body is water, a huge percentage of the planet is water\u2026why wouldn\u2019t a huge percentage of our food be water too?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So, yes. Consuming water is important.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the 8 glasses a day case doesn\u2019t hold water (ha!), as we get a significant portion of our daily H2O from the food we consume.\u00a0 Things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/is-fruit-healthy-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fruits<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/vegetable-haters-how-to-start-eating-vegetables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vegetables<\/a> (and even meat) are composed of a tremendous amount of water, all of which count towards our \u2018hydration quotient\u2019 for the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you know what else counts?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EVERY OTHER BEVERAGE WE DRINK!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/20\/caffeine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tea, coffee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dreaded sugary beverages, milk, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/is-drinking-fruit-juice-healthy-is-fruit-juice-really-as-bad-as-soda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">juices<\/a>, and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/10\/alcohol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcoholic beverages.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"refmark-3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>How Much Water a Day Do You Really Need? I\u2019m going on vacation!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidding again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Seriously though, your thirst is a pretty damn good indicator of when you should consume more water.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Do you think dogs and cats and elephants worry about hydration levels?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nope \u2013 they simply consume water when their body tells them that they are thirsty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3825856 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/elephant-drinking.gif\" alt=\"A cute elephant drinking from a hose.\" width=\"362\" height=\"236\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Adorbs.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As nerds, we tend to overthink, overanalyze, and drive ourselves crazy with too much inf<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Now, if you happen to be one of those people that needs MORE advice than that, check your urine color.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weird, I know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>This chart provides a great test for the proper shade of urine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3825858 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/urine-color-chart-1.jpg\" alt=\"This chart of urine color can help you decide if you should drink more water or not.\" width=\"269\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/urine-color-chart-1.jpg 353w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/urine-color-chart-1-177x300-1.jpg 177w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Things to consider:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to aim (not literally) for the first three categories from the top, or \u201clemonade\u201d color.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pee is starting to resemble Lemon Lime Gatorade (4th category down), you\u2019re dehydrated. From here, the darker and browner the color, the more dehydrated you are.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pee comes out a different color altogether, I would probably seek medical attention immediately. You\u2019re welcome \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if your pee doesn\u2019t have ANY color to it? You might actually be \u201coverhydrated,\u201d which we talk about <a href=\"#5\">in this section<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>So what are the telltale signs that something is wrong, that you are dehydrated?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3825859 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/three-amigos-water.gif\" alt=\"A scene from the Three Amigos, where they clearly need more water.\" width=\"500\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>According to the National Institute of Health,<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"refmark-4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> your primary signs of dehydration are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A feeling of thirst (duh)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry or sticky mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low or no urine output; urine looks dark yellow<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunken eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>If you are feeling one or some of these symptoms, you may be dehydrated.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We want to take this seriously, because SEVERE dehydration can be terrible for your health, even resulting in a coma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not good. (Weight Loss and Water Intake)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3825864 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lego-stromtrooper-water.jpg\" alt=\"A Stormtrooper in water, which is way too much water for him to drink.\" width=\"802\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lego-stromtrooper-water.jpg 2036w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lego-stromtrooper-water-300x112-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lego-stromtrooper-water-713x266-1.jpg 713w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lego-stromtrooper-water-768x287-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lego-stromtrooper-water-1536x574-1.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lego-stromtrooper-water-610x228-1.jpg 610w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/lego-stromtrooper-water-600x224-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>It\u2019s common advice to drink lots of water for weight loss.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it legit?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there any evidence that drinking plenty of water can help one lose weight?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eh, there\u2019s a little!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study conducted had two groups go on the same diet, the only difference being one group had 500 ml of water (about 17 ounces) 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch, and dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The result?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-6\" id=\"refmark-6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Water Group:<\/strong> lost about 4.4% body fat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<strong>The Non-Mandated Water Group:<\/strong> lost about 1.1% body fat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t a TREMENDOUS difference, but it is interesting!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3577086 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/curious-batman.gif\" alt=\"Batman is curious on how carbs and fat factor into weight loss.\" width=\"436\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What might be going on?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are two reasons why drinking plenty of water might help with weight loss:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>You&#8217;re full. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking water takes up room in your stomach. There is less room now for food, but also other water like drinks (which may have sugar and hidden calories in it, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/is-drinking-fruit-juice-healthy-is-fruit-juice-really-as-bad-as-soda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fruit juice<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Water consumption may <i>slightly<\/i> raise your metabolism. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not talking a crazy impact here, but one study found your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate or how many calories you burn at rest) is raised by 24% for 60 minutes after drinking 500 ml (17 oz).<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-7\" id=\"refmark-7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s provide some context here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we address in our guide \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/why-cant-i-lose-weight-heres-the-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why Can\u2019t I Lose Weight?<\/a>\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our bodies obey the Laws of Conservation of Energy and Thermodynamics:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>To lose weight, we need to burn more calories than we consume regularly.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two factors above might lower your \u201ccalories in\u201d and raise your \u201ccalories out\u201d respectively (a concept we discuss in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/what-is-the-cico-diet-how-to-count-calories-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guide to The CICO Diet<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This may help someone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/get-in-shape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get in shape<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, I wouldn\u2019t bet the farm (note to self: buy a farm) on solely drinking water for weight loss. When we highlighted the study above on water consumption and weight loss, it\u2019s important to remember that the two groups were both on a calorically restricted diet. Why don\u2019t I just start pounding water all day long?\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great question, my dear friend.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"5\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Can I Be Overhydrated? (Too Much of a Good Thing)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3825935\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/waterfall.jpg\" alt=\"This picture shows a waterfall, which would be too much water to drink.\" width=\"1020\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/waterfall.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/waterfall-300x109-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/waterfall-713x259-1.jpg 713w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/waterfall-768x279-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/waterfall-610x221-1.jpg 610w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/waterfall-600x218-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>While being properly hydrated is good, it doesn\u2019t mean chugging a gallon of water during your gym session is a good idea either.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If not, then why is this so common to see?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>From Outdoors<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-8\" id=\"refmark-8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A single individual working for the U.S. military decided that water was a tactical weapon.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That if the military could be encouraged to drink more during maneuvers, they\u2019d have less heatstroke and less illness and they\u2019d be more productive and could be better soldiers. It was purely his idea. It had no scientific basis at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two years later he published a paper supposedly saying that if the US soldiers drank 1.9 liters per hour [64 ounces] when they were exercising in the heat they would perform much better. There was utterly no concrete evidence that that was true.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem was, his advice was embraced by the U.S. Military. They changed their drinking guidelines to say that you should now drink 1.9 liters per hour. The same people who drew up those guidelines were then invited by the American College of Sports Medicine to get involved with drawing up guidelines for runners.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1996, that culminated with the new American guidelines,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-9\" id=\"refmark-9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which said that you must drink as much as tolerable during exercise, up to 40 ounces per hour.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That became the mantra\u2014that you had to drink before you became thirsty, and as much as possible during exercise. It was after that the problems of hyponatremia really become problematic around the world.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combine this with the sports beverage industry (which I\u2019ll skewer in a minute) and the bottled water industry (one of the best scams going, which I\u2019ll get to as well), and you have a marketing engine that won\u2019t slow down:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrink before you\u2019re thirsty or it\u2019s too late.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRunning a marathon?\u00a0 It\u2019s better to over hydrate then not drink enough!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBetter safe than sorry!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Actually, you CAN overhydrate, and it can be dangerous \u2013 it\u2019s called <\/b><b>hyponatremia<\/b><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s an electrolyte imbalance from too much water consumed, and it\u2019s bad news bears.<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-10\" id=\"refmark-10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Want to know the people who suffer from hyponatremia the most?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marathon and ultra-runners.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3601072 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/batman-running.gif\" alt=\"Batman has to fun whether he likes to or not...part of fighting crime means running 5Ks (ish).\" width=\"479\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Timothy Noakes, the author of <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0081U6WWG\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0081U6WWG&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=nerdfitn-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><i>Waterlogged<\/i><\/b><\/a><b>, explains that the overconsumption of water can lead to our body developing a severe imbalance of sodium<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our system, which can lead to a litany of side effects, even death.<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-11\" id=\"refmark-11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Noaks discovered people who have dealt with cases of exercise-induced hyponatremia:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat I\u2019ve found is that all of these people were probably drinking 1.2 liters per hour [40 ounces]. They continue to drink like that for four or five hours. Now, normally, if you\u2019re drinking at that rate, you simply pass it out as urine.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person who is overdrinking will start passing urine so frequently that they\u2019ll realize, this is stupid. I\u2019m going to stop drinking.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what happens in hyponatremia is that, for some reason, the brain interprets that the person is dehydrated and secretes the antidiuretic hormone. As a consequence, that prevents all urine production.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although they are sweating, they may be sweating at a rate of 20 ounces per hour, but they are drinking at a rate of 40 ounces per hour. Every hour they are accumulating 20 ounces. You can do that for a couple of hours, but once you\u2019ve accumulated about 60 to 80 ounces of water in your body, all of your tissues become bloated, and the organ that becomes most affected is the brain.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brain swells, and because it is in a rigid skull, it cannot swell very much. The more it swells, the more pressure, and that eventually squeezes the arteries supplying blood to the brain. Ultimately, there is less oxygen getting to the brain, and certain parts become damaged.\u201c<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Not good.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One 2002 study found that 13% of Boston Marathon runners experienced hyponatremia. While many experience hyponatremia without being in immediate danger, it certainly isn\u2019t healthy.<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-12\" id=\"refmark-12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how do you combat this?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Drink when you are thirsty!\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3825875 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cat-drinking-water.gif\" alt=\"A gif of a cat drinking water\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Time to answer your next question:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIf drinking too much water causes an issue with sodium imbalances, what about sports drinks? They have electrolytes and sodium in them!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow me!<\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"6\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Are Sports Drinks More Hydrating Than Water? (Water, Sugar, Salt, and You)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3825876 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/gatorade-1.jpg\" alt=\"A picture of Gatorade, which is more or less just sugar water.\" width=\"801\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/gatorade-1.jpg 1017w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/gatorade-1-300x125-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/gatorade-1-713x297-1.jpg 713w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/gatorade-1-768x320-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/gatorade-1-610x254-1.jpg 610w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/gatorade-1-600x250-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 801px) 100vw, 801px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Jordan is famously seen drinking Gatorade during his flu game in 96, which tells us that without Gatorade he wouldn\u2019t have been able to play:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Michael Jordan x Gatorade &quot;Win From Within&quot; Commercial\" width=\"950\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BHF7jF9hGrE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little do they tell you that Michael also had another secret weapon at his disposal that helped him play up to snuff in that game: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.complex.com\/sports\/2013\/11\/ball-boy-apple-sauce-michael-jordans-sneakers-flu-game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apple sauce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So why is that famous commercial all about Gatorade and not about apple sauce?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One word, and it rhymes with \u201choney.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3697908 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/money.gif\" alt=\"It&#039;s a shame even scientific studies can be bought.\" width=\"320\" height=\"219\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s wayyyy more money in the sports beverage industry, and they can sell on the term \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/what-the-eff-is-an-electrolyte-is-gatorade-the-real-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">replenish electrolytes<\/a>\u201d which is actually way simpler to do than they make it out to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re promised that without the careful combination of electrolytes and ingredients in Gatorade, we\u2019re going to get dehydrated when exercising and suffer.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s what happens: When you sweat, you lose fluids and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/what-the-eff-is-an-electrolyte-is-gatorade-the-real-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electrolytes<\/a>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> especially sodium and chloride (which is why your sweat tastes salty\u2026stop tasting your sweat). Now, when you\u2019re lacking fluids and electrolytes, your muscles and performance can suffer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that\u2019s where Gatorade ALLEGEDLY will solve all of your problems.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s the truth:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unless you are exercising for hours and hours and hours, your electrolyte imbalance will not cause a drop in performance. If you are exercising for an hour or less, some sips of water to quench your thirst is more than enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you ARE exercising for hours upon hours, then additional electrolyte products may help.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these instances, Gatorade <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help potentially, but there\u2019s nothing in Gatorade that\u2019s magic. It\u2019s sugar, water, sodium, potassium, and then some artificial and natural flavoring to make it taste and look the way it does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Want the benefits of Gatorade while on your marathon run without having to buy Gatorade? Try different combos (mixing in some OJ or using coconut water!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And just like that, you have your sodium, some sugars, and rehydration. No fancy marketing required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO?\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do some boring cardio for 20 minutes (which burns a minimal number of calories), and then chug a 32 oz Gatorade (200 calories and 50+ grams of sugar!) and think you\u2019re better off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Negatory!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water works just fine for 98% of the activities you will ever do.<\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"7\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Does Coffee Dehydrate You? (Caffeine as a Diuretic)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3825878 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/coffee-cup.jpg\" alt=\"This pictured cup of coffee will indeed hydrate you, because it has so much water.\" width=\"803\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/coffee-cup.jpg 708w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/coffee-cup-300x114-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/coffee-cup-610x232-1.jpg 610w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/coffee-cup-600x228-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 803px) 100vw, 803px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Time to put the myth-busting cap back on: You\u2019ve probably been told that drinking caffeinated beverages will dehydrate you.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That by consuming caffeinated beverages, you\u2019re actually expelling more water than you are consuming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is another one of those bits of conventional wisdom that gets blown out of proportion.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Yes, caffeine is a mild diuretic. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, our bodies are pretty darn smart, and because all drinks are composed almost entirely of water, it more than makes up for the effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>As pointed out here in this study:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-13\" id=\"refmark-13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingestion of caffeine in large doses (at least 250-300 mg, equivalent to the amount found in 2-3 cups of coffee or 5-8 cups of tea) results in a short-term stimulation of urine output in individuals who have been <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">eprived of caffeine for a period of days or weeks<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A profound tolerance to the diuretic and other effects of caffeine develops, however, and the actions are much diminished in individuals who regularly consume tea or coffee.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doses of caffeine equivalent to the amount normally found in standard servings of tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks appear to have no diuretic action.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So coffee can actually help you stay hydrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3825880 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/bill-murray-coffee.gif\" alt=\"A gif of Bill Murray drinking coffee, but ah, maybe use a cup though.\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>What about alcohol?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Same thing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol has diuretic properties, but only causes dehydration when consumed at beyond normal levels. (Here\u2019s our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/alcohol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Guide to Drinking<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which covers our thoughts on being a fit nerd that can still enjoy an occasional cocktail.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What ALLLLL OF THIS MEANS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink when you are thirsty.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All liquids you consume count towards hydration, and only in cases of overconsumption can they negatively affect your hydration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"8\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>A Note on Bottled Water (Invest in a Water Filter)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3825884 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/a-bottle-of-water.jpg\" alt=\"A picture of a bottle of water, which you should only buy if you have to.\" width=\"713\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/a-bottle-of-water.jpg 713w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/a-bottle-of-water-300x200-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/a-bottle-of-water-610x406-1.jpg 610w, https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/a-bottle-of-water-600x400-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 713px) 100vw, 713px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>In 2019, total U.S. bottled water consumption increased to 14.4 billion gallons, up from 9.1 billion gallons in 2011.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-14\" id=\"refmark-14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every person in America drank an average of 43.7 gallons of bottled water last year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottled water sales increased by 3.6 percent in 2019, and now total $34.6 billion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yikes,<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>It is very likely that your local tap water is fine!<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check your local government for more information, but if you live in the United States, chances are your tap water is equal or better to the bottled stuff! Heck Coca-Cola knows this, as their Dasani Brand is ultimately filtered tap water.<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-15\" id=\"refmark-15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Want that bottle of Fiji water because it\u2019s clean and pure and provides you with magical abilities like a waterbender?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3825885 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/waterbender.gif\" alt=\"Drinking Fiji water probably isn&#039;t going to turn you into this waterbender from Avatar.\" width=\"500\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is less arsenic in Cleveland Tap water than Fiji water!<a class=\"fn-ref-mark\" href=\"#footnote-16\" id=\"refmark-16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a> Much less expensive too \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t like the taste of, or are concerned about your local tap water, try a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004GNGID0\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B004GNGID0&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=nerdfitn-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brita filter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or something equivalent.
