{"id":44801,"date":"2024-11-04T14:48:55","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T15:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/?p=44801"},"modified":"2024-11-04T15:58:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T15:58:46","slug":"the-past-isnt-set-in-stone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/everything-else\/the-past-isnt-set-in-stone\/","title":{"rendered":"The Past Isn\u2019t Set In Stone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>I\u2019m currently reading<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4hs3nvr\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><b>The Tainted Cup<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><b>, a fantasy detective novel.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think \u201cSherlock Holmes set in Westeros.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main character has this augmentation that allows him to absorb every single detail of every interaction, crime scene, and then recite back these exact details at a later date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember a horrifying <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Mirror<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> episode about this very thing: being able to recall every fact of every interaction in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/pHRZPANX61RkrA6zL3ugAr\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the thing: in all of these scenarios, the facts might be true, but the analysis of these facts still leaves plenty of room for improvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I thought about this a lot recently when I stumbled across two stories I want to share:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/sive.rs\/pnt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><b>The Past is Not True<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><b>\u201d from Derek Sivers:<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was 17, I was driving recklessly and crashed into an oncoming car. I found out that I broke the other driver\u2019s spine, and she\u2019ll never walk again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I carried that burden with me everywhere, and felt so horrible about it for so many years that at age 35 I decided to find this woman to apologize. I found her name and address, went to her house, knocked on the door, and a middle-aged woman answered. As soon as I said, \u201cI\u2019m the teenager that hit your car eighteen years ago and broke your spine\u201d, I started sobbing &#8211; a big ugly cry, surfacing years of regret.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was so sweet, and hugged me saying, \u201cOh sweetie, sweetie! Don\u2019t worry. I\u2019m fine!\u201d Then she walked me into her living room. Walked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turns out I had misunderstood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes she fractured a couple vertebrae but it never stopped her from walking. She said \u201cthat little accident\u201d helped her pay more attention to her fitness, and since then has been in better health than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she apologized<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for causing the accident in the first place. Apologized.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>And this<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/collabfund.com\/blog\/a-message-from-the-past-thoughts-on-nostalgia\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><b>story about \u201cthe good ole days\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><b> from author Morgan Housel:<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few months ago I reminisced to my wife about how awesome [life was in our early 20s]. We were 23, gainfully employed, living in our version of the Taj Mahal. This was before kids, so we slept in until 10am on the weekends, went for a walk, had brunch, took a nap, and went out for dinner. That was our life. For years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was peak living, as good as it gets,\u201d I told her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d she said. \u201cYou were more anxious, scared, and probably depressed then than you\u2019ve ever been.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026In my head, today, I look back and think, \u201cI must have been so happy then. Those were my best years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in reality, at the time, I was thinking, \u201cI can\u2019t wait for these years to end.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has me thinking a lot about the past, and our future. It turns out, neither one is set in stone!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Which Past Story can you rewrite?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the clich\u00e9 goes, it\u2019s easier to connect the dots looking backward than it is looking forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Is there a story from your past about a particular moment you\u2019re still carrying with you?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe it\u2019s one full of shame about something that happened, but it led to something even better for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe it\u2019s longing for a past life that never actually existed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The past already happened, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s set in stone!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Returning to Sivers:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can change your history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actual factual events are such a small part of it.
