{"id":44805,"date":"2024-10-28T13:43:30","date_gmt":"2024-10-28T14:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/?p=44805"},"modified":"2024-11-04T15:58:48","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T15:58:48","slug":"wasted-effort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/everything-else\/wasted-effort\/","title":{"rendered":"Wasted Effort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>I remember racing up the down escalator in Macy\u2019s at the Cape Cod Mall.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My mom, calmly riding the Up escalator like a regular human, would say I was going to hurt myself (possible) or I was making a scene (correct) or interrupting the people trying to get down the escalation (also correct).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes I would be able to get to the top, exhausted and out of breath, while my mom would arrive at the same time laughing at how hard I had to work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spend enough time in an airport (or travel with young kids), and within a few minutes you\u2019ll see kids trying to run on a People Mover moving in the other direction. Exhaustion for them, entertainment for us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/4o4dFupqzpgLmGcGjtYDuu\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See where I\u2019m going with this?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>My friend Mark Manson put the following in<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/markmanson.net\/breakthrough\/097-are-you-ruining-your-life\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><b>his newsletter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><b> this week:<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll the grit, persistence, and motivation in the world won\u2019t do you any good if you\u2019re working on the wrong thing. In fact, it will do the opposite.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which brings me to today\u2019s question\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where are you running UP the DOWN escalator?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Earlier this year, I remember having a conversation with Coach Matt from Team NF about<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/coaching-overview-page\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><b>coaching clients<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><b> who succeed and who struggle.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Those who find success: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they identify the escalator moving in the right direction, and work hard to get on that one. Each step actually magnifies their efforts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Those who struggle: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they continue to spend their energy, willpower, and effort on changes that don\u2019t move the needle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I bet you\u2019ve had moments where you wondered if all the effort was ACTUALLY worth it, or why progress seemed harder than normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are a few examples of trying to run up the down escalator:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending lots of money on expensive supplements (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribed by a medical professional).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switching to organic, gluten free, or low carb keto snacks based <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the latest trend.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying complicated diets that don\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduce how much food you eat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doing exercise you hate <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exclusively<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for weight loss reasons.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running (and anything else considered cardio) is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">great<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for heart and lung health. But running and cardio is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0033062018301440\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">far less effective for weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than we think (unless we ALSO adjust our nutrition strategy too).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My guess is you want to look more \u201ctoned,\u201d which means you don\u2019t just want to \u201close weight,\u201d but rather keep the muscle you have and lose the fat on top of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If these are our goals, then putting on our focus on the right escalator is key.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are examples of walking up the up escalator:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding ways to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/how-to-lose-weight-without-dieting-5-rules-of-weight-loss\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eat fewer calories<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without feeling restricted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritizing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/strength-training-101\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strength training<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a few times per week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/how-much-protein-do-i-need-to-eat-every-day-protein-101-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more protein<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d a focus for each meal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being okay with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/weight-loss-and-video-games\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accepting all the tools available<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for health.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show me somebody that eats mostly protein, fruits and vegetables, and strength trains (with progressive overload) for 30 minutes a few times per week, and I\u2019ll show you somebody who is moving UP the right escalator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s the thing:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/dont-like-exercise\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><b>humans aren\u2019t wired to love exercise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We\u2019re also not designed to thrive in a world in which high calorie, nutritionally-empty delicious foods are always available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which means if we\u2019re going to spend valuable brain power and energy on doing<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> something,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we might as well pick the right things to trick ourselves into doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yep, there\u2019s a whole \u201clife vs behavior\u201d change component to this too (which I covered in a previous newsletter about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/mario-bowser-get-wrong\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manageable vs Meaningful<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).
