{"id":44809,"date":"2024-10-21T14:38:47","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T14:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/?p=44809"},"modified":"2024-11-04T15:58:51","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T15:58:51","slug":"beware-the-story-embrace-the-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/everything-else\/beware-the-story-embrace-the-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Beware the Story, Embrace the Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Have you ever heard of \u201cBlue Zones\u201d?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These pockets of the world are known for having citizens who live exceptionally long, healthy lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these locations may sound familiar:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okinawa, Japan (home of Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid!). Sardinia, Italy. Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. Icaria, Greece.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These locations have a higher percentage of people who live longer due to their local-whole foods diet, high vegetable consumption, low instances of disease, rich social interactions, low stress, and plenty of physical activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Books, documentaries, and countless news articles have championed these societies, and millions upon millions of health conscious individuals have modeled their lifestyles after how these people live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problem with this amazing story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not actually true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sHZD3W7o62vCcZNGN9KJNy\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>The First Ig Nobel Prize in Demography<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Last month, Dr. Saul Justin Newman was awarded the first \u201cIg Nobel Prize\u201d in Demography.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These awards are given out annually for scientific research that \u201cmakes people laugh, then think.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this particular award, Newman was recognized for debunking pretty much all of the findings of any study relating to the Blue Zones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s what Dr. Newman discovered:<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe highest rates of achieving extreme old age are predicted by high poverty, the lack of birth certificates, and fewer 90-year-olds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poverty and pressure to commit pension fraud were shown to be excellent indicators of reaching ages 100+ in a way that is \u2018the opposite of rational expectations.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out that most of the \u201cvery old, healthy\u201d individuals in these blue zones were simply a result of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/ioe\/news\/2024\/sep\/ucl-demographers-work-debunking-blue-zone-regions-exceptional-lifespans-wins-ig-nobel-prize\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very poorly kept records, pension fraud, and outright lying<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Let\u2019s take a look at what actually happens on Okinawa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDespite vegetables and sweet potatoes being promoted as key components of the Okinawan \u2018Blue Zone\u2019 diets, according to the Japanese government, Okinawans eat the least vegetables and sweet potatoes in Japan and have the highest body mass index.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ooooof. So, what the heck do we do now!?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Beware anecdotal narratives that make dramatic promises<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spend enough time on social media, and you\u2019ll stumble across people telling you to only eat meat, eliminate carbs completely, how \u201cthis one supplement saved their life,\u201d or that doing XYZ cured their illness, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These anecdotal stories, especially when they have a villain, a victim and a heroic tale about overcoming adversity, are unbelievably powerful. They\u2019re also often used to sell you a solution in a pill or powder form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is we data that is being constantly refined by science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to know what the people of Okinawa eat, nor do we need to study the daily habits of a particular community in Costa Rica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t get me wrong, I love a good whimsical tale about the habits of a far off land too, but it still comes back to reality and science!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we can remember that we need to do what\u2019s best <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for our particular situation. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That might include<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/why-mental-health-matters\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it might include<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/weight-loss-and-video-games\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it might include just focusing on sleep right now!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s up for us to decide, and we can do so confidently. Not because it\u2019s what happens in Costa Rica or Greece, but simply because it\u2019s what\u2019s best for us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are some of the ways in which we can positively impact our lifespan and\/or healthspan.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating the correct number of calories for our goal weight. (Obesity is one of the highest correlated indicators for increased<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23280227\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all-cause mortality<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diets that consist primarily of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28446499\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lean protein, whole foods, vegetables, and fruit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing smoking, drinking of alcohol, and some processed foods (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/risk-prevention\/understanding-cancer-risk\/known-and-probable-human-carcinogens.html#:~:text=For%20example%2C%20IARC%20considers%20there,are%20in%20the%20same%20category\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">known carcinogens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11147802\/#:~:text=A%202022%20systematic%20review%20and,15%25%20compared%20with%20doing%20none.&amp;text=Subsequent%20studies%20have%20observed%20risk%20reductions%20of%20similar%20magnitude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strength training<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for muscle synthesis, balance, bone density.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2910600\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strong social network<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: friends and family.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6527136\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical activity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (even walking!).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yep, some of these things are part of the \u201cBlue Zone Diet\u201d&#8230; just without the sensationalism and pension fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And many of them might be outside of our control!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(23)00081-6\/fulltext\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social determinants of health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (financial stability, access to health care, education, our neighborhood) are strongly correlated with all-cause mortality, and many of these things might be unavailable to large portions of the population.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Life is Messy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>I don\u2019t bring all this up to tell you to avoid a Blue Zone diet.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heck, you could do a lot worse than eating a Mediterranean diet! <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019ll most likely lose weight and feel healthier if you eat mostly fresh fish, whole foods, and vegetables.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I bring all this up to remind you that life is messy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A long healthy life is a combination of dozens interconnected things (like those listed above), thousands of decisions made over our lifetime, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stuff like genetics, society, and luck! What works for one person might not work for the next person, and there\u2019s no \u201cone diet fits all\u201d solution to our problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We could get hit by a bus tomorrow, get a cancer diagnosis despite \u201cdoing everything right,\u201d or experience a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/toxic-positivity-acceptance\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freak accident that changes everything<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, rather than chasing immortality through sensationalized anecdotes, or getting swept up in the latest Social Media trend\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can keep our focus on the stuff that we feel pretty damn confident will make us better off tomorrow than we are today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the things on that list above!
