I thought this article was about consistency &#8211; then you start off saying it\u2019s OK to miss a workout?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What I\u2019m saying is to not beat yourself up over it. I\u2019ll see people be so tough on themselves for one missed workout, that it spirals downward and then they\u2019re doing NO workouts.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unnecessary, and it\u2019s not sustainable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s something I remind my clients: If being tough on yourself helped with workout consistency, it would\u2019ve helped by now.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So first of all, forgive yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3909134\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/youll-be-fine.gif\" alt=\"A gif of Woody saying &quot;You&#039;ll be fine&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, I share with them a saying we have here at Nerd Fitness:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNever Two in a Row.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>As Rebel Leader Steve mentions in the video below, it means aim to not miss two workouts, back to back:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pick yourself up when you stumble! \ud83d\ude4c (Never 2 in a ROW!)\" width=\"950\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HjOx2vGFZSc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a mantra you\u2019ll hear throughout the Rebellion (our community!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the justification<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: as I mentioned, missing one workout is nbd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, two workouts in a row <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be the start of a trend. If you\u2019re not careful, after a few missed workouts, you could just stop exercising altogether.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s the real danger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we aim to not allow the trend to start in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Takeaway<\/b><\/span><b>: If you miss a workout, it\u2019s fine. It goes a long way to helping them stick to their workout schedule.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you plan on training first thing at 8am, have a calendar reminder go off at 7:50am.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019ll make a difference. can do to improve your workout consistency: have a backup plan.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say a pipe bursts at your gym, and it\u2019s closed for the next few days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does that mean you should stop working out until they resolve their plumbing emergency?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" always good to have a backup for any regular emergency like:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I can\u2019t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/a-beginners-guide-to-the-gym-everything-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">train at my gym<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I\u2019ll do <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/the-42-best-bodyweight-exercises-the-ultimate-guide-for-working-out-anywhere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bodyweight training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it\u2019s raining heavily and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/running-properly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t run outside<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I\u2019ll jump on the stationary bike in the garage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I\u2019m <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/i-worked-out-and-now-im-so-sore-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore from a hard workout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, today I&#8217;ll just do <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/a-nerds-guide-to-yoga-4-movements-to-try-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some light yoga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, just because your initial plan falls through, doesn\u2019t mean you have to completely throw in the towel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or as I jokingly tell my clients, just because one tire goes flat, doesn\u2019t mean you should slash the other target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiking<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/the-definitive-guide-to-parkour-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkour<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video games that get you moving.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full rel=\"noopener\"><b>Temptation Bundling<\/b><\/a><b>\u201d and I\u2019ve seen it help a lot of my clients:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you only listen to your favorite podcast when you run, eventually, you might start looking forward to running.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same thing could happen with music. If you start to associate your favorite tunes with building up a sweat, one day you might actually enjoy building up a sweat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say you only watch <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great British Bake Off<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0while on your elliptical. If that\u2019s the case, you\u2019re going to start protecting your time exercising (\u201cDon\u2019t bother me now\u201d).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t overlook the power of coupling activities you enjoy with your workouts.\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n<a name=\"5\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Step 5: How to Build Workout Accountability<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3568571 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/legos-training-together.jpg\" alt=\"Two Legos about to workout together.\" width=\"804\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/legos-training-together.jpg 768w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/legos-training-together-300x125-1.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/legos-training-together-713x297-1.jpg 713w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/legos-training-together-600x250-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Another strategy we can deploy when improving workout consistency: accountability and support.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s nothing quite like being accountable to another human being when it comes to exercising regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>There are a few ways we can create workout accountability:<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>#1) Tell Friends and Family<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share your goals with your loved ones, then let them know the times you\u2019ll be working out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will help for a couple of reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re more likely to follow through with action if we commit ourselves in front of others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we don\u2019t show up for a workout, they may politely call us out on it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3908866 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/i-know-youre-in-there.gif\" alt=\"A Police Officer at the door saying Someone saying &quot;I Know You&#039;re In There&quot;\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>#2) Join an Online Community<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 21st century, it\u2019s very easy to find a group of people who are on a similar mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to exercise regularly, I\u2019d wager you aren\u2019t the only person on the internet working towards that goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So join a digital community! That way you can get in on some group accountability.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We regularly hold group challenges through our app, Nerd Fitness Journey. That\u2019s how we work to build consistency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So do a short walk today. Then another one the day after tomorrow. Then a third two days from then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boom, three workouts in one week, all by just walking.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a name=\"7\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Step 7: How to Find Time to Workout<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3908877\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hourglass.jpg\" alt=\"A picture of three hourglasses.\" width=\"799\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hourglass.jpg 2516w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hourglass-300x162-1.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hourglass-713x385-1.jpg 713w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hourglass-768x414-1.jpg 768w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hourglass-1536x828-1.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hourglass-2048x1105-1.jpg 2048w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hourglass-610x329-1.jpg 610w, http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/hourglass-600x324-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019ll be real with you: no one is sitting around, twiddling their thumbs with time to kill.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re going to make time to work out, you\u2019ll need to figure out what activity in your life you can change or eliminate:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe your two-hour nightly TV ritual can come down to an hour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you start biking home from work instead of driving.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you catch up with your spouse over an evening walk instead of a drink.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>This is why scheduling your workouts in your calendar can be so critical<\/strong> &#8211; it helps you see what needs to be moved around to get your training done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, it\u2019s okay to experiment here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3601635 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/science-experiment.gif\" alt=\"A god doing a science experiment\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you create a schedule, and you don\u2019t hit it all, it\u2019s okay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps you just created an unrealistic schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If so, then modify the workout:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try a 30-minute workout instead of an hour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try two workouts a week instead of three.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go around the block once instead of twice.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, we\u2019re not worried about the amount of time here. Instead, we\u2019re concerned about you hitting your workout schedule consistently. It\u2019s nothing to feel shame over.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Step 2: Have a plan! <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without scheduling your week\u2019s workouts, how do you even know if you\u2019re being consistent or not?<\/span><b><\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Step 3: Have a backup plan! (Lose the \u201call or nothing\u201d mindset). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your first plan falls through, nbd. Just move onto the next one. \u201cSome\u201d workout is always better than \u201cno\u201d workout. Do the best you can.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Step 4: Make it fun. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your workout doesn\u2019t need to be something you dread. If you like hiking, go hiking. If you like swimming, go swimming. Any movement is beneficial and should be encouraged. No one said you have to hate it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Step 5: Find an accountability partner. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going alone is almost always harder. If you can find a friend or coach to team with, it will make working out consistently easier.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Step 6: Embrace \u201caction\u201d not \u201cmotivation.\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have to wait around for motivation to start working out, you might be waiting for quite a while. You\u2019ll become motivated <em>after<\/em> you act.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Step 7: Don&#8217;t find time, make time. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your schedule won\u2019t magically free itself.
