{"id":78380,"date":"2025-01-06T20:16:49","date_gmt":"2025-01-06T21:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/?p=78380"},"modified":"2025-01-07T22:02:53","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T22:02:53","slug":"whats-different-this-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/everything-else\/whats-different-this-time\/","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s different this time?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Today is the most hope and optimism-filled day of the year.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s great!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/email\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever goals or resolutions you\u2019ve set for yourself, I\u2019m excited for you!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re all trying to better ourselves, and even though things haven\u2019t worked out the way we wanted them to in the past, we hope <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musician Nick Cave describes hope as \u201coptimism with a broken heart,\u201d and I think that\u2019s beautifully accurate. We\u2019re all trying to be different when change is so damn hard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re trying to build a new workout habit or change the number on the scale this year, I salute you. Setting a goal to change is very commendable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But to give ourselves the best chance of accomplishing our goal, we must combine the goal with some self-reflection and self-awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are TWO questions to ask yourself as we begin 2025\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Question 1: What&#8217;s different this time?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>I\u2019m proud of you for starting again.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what\u2019s different about this attempt?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do what you\u2019ve always done, you\u2019ll get what you\u2019ve always got.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you pick the same goal or strategy that you tried (unsuccessfully) in the past, the end result will be the same: another lost year of \u201cwhy can\u2019t I get my act together?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, be deliberate about what\u2019s different this time!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t just \u201cgo on XYZ diet\u201d or \u201cgive up all sugar forever\u201d or \u201ctrain for a marathon\u201d again, especially if you\u2019ve tried those things before and couldn\u2019t stick with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Something has to be different this time:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make fewer changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick ONE goal and focus on it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick a different workout routine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick a different diet or nutrition change.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick a different time of day to work out.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recruit a friend to join you so you\u2019re not doing it alone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your new desired behavior<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/dont-like-exercise\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beneficial or necessary<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prove to yourself you\u2019ve learned something from your past attempts. Don\u2019t let past failures be in vain &#8211; they showed you what doesn\u2019t work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for you.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try something different this time!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Question 2: What are you afraid of?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>You\u2019re full of momentum right now, and that\u2019s great.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But three weeks from now, life will happen, and something will go wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has been your tendency when this happens in the past?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We ask every<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/coaching-overview-page\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NF Coaching Client<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before they start, \u201cWhat are you most nervous about?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>That answer is something they\u2019re aware of as a result of their past attempts:<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><b>Are you going to get busy and decide \u201cto take a break until things slow down?\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Great! Now you know when that little voice in your head says this, you can prepare for it, plan to do something differently, and decide that you don\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to listen to that voice in your head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Are you going to have one bad day and go totally off the rails? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great! Now you know that when you have one bad day, you can forgive yourself, not look back in anger or guilt, and get right back on track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Are you going to give up even though you really really really want to push through? Great!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This happens to all of us when motivation wanes after a few weeks. Consider<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/blog\/ulysses-pacts\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adding a Ulysses Pact<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to guard against your weaknesses or making a bet with a friend to keep you accountable.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>NF Coach Matt Myers was recently on the<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/joshnicholsgolf.com\/podcasts\/crush-your-fitness-goals-and-elevate-your-golf-game-in-2025\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><b>Mental Golf Podcast with Josh Nichols<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><b> &#8211; and at the 24:30 mark in the episode, Matt pointed out something to Josh that surprised him:<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou told me before you started, &#8216;I know I\u2019m going to come out of the gates HARD, but about 3 weeks in, I\u2019m going to burn out and disappear.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I said, &#8216;Thanks for letting me know,&#8217; and I had all these alarms and alerts ready to check in with you repeatedly around the 21 day mark!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh had the self-awareness to know where he would screw up in the future, he and Coach Matt planned for it, and got over the hump together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, they\u2019ve worked together for two months (and counting), and Josh has only missed a single day of checking in and missing one day didn\u2019t cause Josh\u2019s normal \u201call-or-nothing\u201d behavior to kick in!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>This time CAN be different<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>We all set out to change, and even when we\u2019re self-aware\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We often bite off more than we can chew:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bestratefinders.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/email-1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our goals and hopes often exceed the reality that we\u2019re fallible, busy, complicated humans living unpredictable lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s okay!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we\u2019re aware of these things, if we can try differently\u2026then even if this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">next<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attempt doesn\u2019t work either, we can remove that strategy from the list of potential successful paths, and try again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s all life is anyway: try, fail, adjust, restart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>-Steve<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>PS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you don\u2019t want to go on this journey alone, I\u2019d be honored if you check out<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdfitness.com\/coaching-overview-page\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the NF Coaching Program<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our coaches are awesome and we\u2019d love to help you reach your goals.
